Essentials from the Gentoo udev guide

emerge udev hotplug coldplug

Kernel settings:

• activate hotplug support in general setup
• activate /proc filesystem in pseudo filesystems
• activate shmfs in pseudo filesystem
• deactivate devfs in pseudo filesystems

Set /etc/conf.d/rc:

RC_DEVICE_TARBALL="no"

Remove all devices but keep /dev/console and /dev/null.
